The Wild Atlantic Way (Slí an Atlantaigh Fhiáin) of Ireland is a 2300 km long sprawling coastal route along western Ireland. Experience picturesque lighthouses that fill you with a sense of nostalgia of time long ago, breathe the crisp air among some of Europe’s most stunning cliff views, and slow down as you stop for a pint and have a wee chat with the locals.
I traveled to Ireland in the month of December and March where I toured the Wild Atlantic Way via car. While beautiful and rugged, remember the weather is very unpredictable in Ireland.
There are so many breathtaking locations to stop at along the way, so here are 5 must see locations along the Wild Atlantic Way from my journey that I can recommend.
Slieve League (Sliabh Liag)
Slieve League is an incredible sea cliff experience. Surprisingly, lesser known, even though they rise 3 times as high as the Cliffs of Moher. There are view points and walking paths for every level of difficulty.
Glencolumbkile
I stepped into a more simple and ancient time the further West I traversed. Glencolumbkile was one of my favorite areas to visit. It’s still one of the largest areas of Gaeltacht (Irish-speaking) areas of Ireland.
Ardara
The weather was very trying during my visit to Ardara, but the people were incredibly kind and the town was lovely. I would suggest visiting this area during the summer time as icy roads led to dangerous conditions when passing through Glengash Pass.
Cliff of Moher
Perhaps the most famous of Irish landscapes, you cannot visit Ireland without a trip to the Cliffs of Moher. You can book your tickets through their official website here. They are very accessible for all ages.
Valentia Island
The last place I visited and the most memorable. I loved this little island. There isn’t much to do except explore the natural beauty and head into nearby Portmagee for fish and chips One of the highlights of Valentia Island is the view of the Skelligs. Check here for licensed tour operators — and check early as they sell out fast since they were featured in Star Wars.
