Dar is an interesting city and there is still so much to know. Here are some highlights from my time in Dar.
Kids at the beach and Expat Kite Surfers
Channeling my inner Carrie Bradshaw
Kahawa with Maasai / learning gendered greetings
Some people hate Dar. It’s busy, dirty, there’s theft, transportation is terrifying and it’s hotter than the fourth circle of hell at times. However, I quite enjoy it now!
I like being able to drink street coffee and kashata with the men when I feel like it. I enjoy the different street foods and my mother would love to see the beautiful rows of temples. In Dar, I don’t stand out as much and it’s nice not being called mzungu (foreigner). The safi (fancy) life on the peninsula is a welcomed reprieve from conservative dress of village life to wear western clothes. Women wear pants and even skirts ABOVE the knee. You can find a beautiful beach, chill spot for happy hour, brunch, or enjoy the organized chaos of the fish market and try the boiled octopus – my absolute favorite! Embrace it for what it is.
If you have the chance, take the time to really explore Dar es Salaam.
Ramble on,
Ann
